Almost everyone who has dentures has or will experience a break and require help to fix dentures at some point in time. Some fixes may qualify as an emergency needing specialist assistance; others may be simple enough that you can make a temporary fix on your own. Regardless of what kind of break you experience there are some things to keep in mind and actions you can take to ensure the best teeth repair possible.

Durable Yet Delicate

Although made from extremely durable acrylic and reinforced with wire, dentures must also be delicate in order to fit comfortably in the mouth. That delicacy comes with a price; it also means they are very fragile and are easily damaged. The most common damage involves teeth repair. Broken and chipped teeth or teeth that have fallen out completely are common. Fortunately, those types of fixes are not usually considered emergency and you can make do until you’re able to see your denturist or have a lab repair them.

More significant repairs involve dentures that have broken in half or have developed fractures, wear out from age or simply don’t fit correctly anymore. Still other repairs come thanks to family dogs, who seem to relish chewing on dental appliances.

In all cases, a denture-wearer should have a spare set, or a duplicate denture, on hand. Having a spare set will eliminate any extreme emergency situations you might experience if you only have one set.

Most denturists and dentists will recommend routine maintenance on dentures, which will help prolong their life and can identify any damage that might be occurring before it becomes too problematic. Since dentures are such a significant investment, it makes sense to keep all of your maintenance appointments, even if you don’t think there is anything wrong with your set.

False Teeth Repair Tips

Probably the most important thing you can do if your dentures do break or a tooth falls out, is to keep all of the pieces together. A lab that has all of the original pieces has a much better chance of repairing the denture than not. If your dentures do break, it is a good idea to fix them as soon as possible so you don’t lose the pieces over time.

If you only need to fix a tooth, you may be able to do that with a drugstore denture repair kit, but this is not recommended as a long-term solution as the materials used in the kits can damage the denture beyond repair. Superglue should never be used on dentures.

The type of break has a direct impact on the length of time the repair will take. As such, it is good to know that consumers can go directly to a denture repair lab for fixes as opposed to going through their dental clinic or denturist. Chances are, the dentist will send the repair out to a dental repair lab anyway. By approaching them directly, you can save yourself time and money over going through your dentist.

Denture-wearers should understand that denture repairs and replacement will become necessary at some point. Therefore, when damage does occur, remember not to panic and keep as many pieces of the denture together as you can. Then seek out professional repairs. Today’s denture technology makes fixing them easier and faster than ever and before you know it your teeth will be back and your smile will be as good as new.

The Toasters Special Guests

Sunday, 20. May 2012

THE TOASTERS + Special Guests
Event on 2012-07-18 19:30:00

The Toasters, are "Ska Pioneers" (Billboard magazine) and boldly go where no ska band has gone before. Having been compared to the Ramones, due to their longevity and adherence to core principles, the Toasters are held to be one of most influential ska bands out there. Their lean, mean ska machine has galvanized audiences and musicians alike with their embrace of the Jamaica-born pop music style that overwhelmed England in the 1960's, migrated to America in the early 1980s, and went global in the 1990s. The hallmark Toasters sound sits at the nexus of Reggae, Jazz, Punk and Soul and is the musical equivalent of a brass knuckle-duster.

Formed in New York City by British guitarist/frontman Rob "Bucket" Hingley in 1981, the Toasters exploded onto the Lower East Side scene. Cutting their teeth with a residency at legendary clubs like CBGB and Danceteria, the band has defied gravity and industry skeptics alike by staying true to their original 2-Tone ska roots, whilst logging over 4000 globe-trotting live appearances.

Longtime fans and critics agree, the current "International All-Stars" posse (featuring members of some of the world's greatest ska bands) is one of the most formidable in The Toasters' long and chequered history. Along with the irrepressible Bucket on lead vocals and guitar, The Beat's Andy Pearson is featured on bass. Expect to see Neil Johnson (Planet Smashers) and Tommy Quartulli on saxophone (The Allstonians), Greg Robinson (Mephiskapheles) on trombone and Jesse Hayes (Westbound Train) on drums. Special appearances by Arjen Bijleveld (Rotterdam Ska-Jazz Foundation) and Buford O'Sullivan (Easy Star All-Stars) are also to be expected in 2009. Legendary keyboardist Dave Barry rounds out the posse.

As the founder of Megalith Records (and former boss of the legendary Moon Ska Records, the most influential ska label of the 1990s) the Toasters' leader, Rob "Bucket" Hingley has a ska resume that trumps virtually anyone else in the business. With the aid and support of likeminded musicians such as producer Joe Jackson, who has worked with the band over the years, he has been able to compile a recorded legacy and a songwriting catalog. Among the many ska classics Hingley has penned: "Weekend In L.A.," "Matt Davis," "2-Tone Army," "Social Security," "Dub 56"—and the list goes on and on.

In the commercial realm, the Toasters have recorded jingles for AOL, Cisco Systems, Miller, Anheuser-Busch, and Coca-Cola, and have contributed to movie and television scores (Bleached, Bang!, MTV's Wildboyz, Mission Hill, Kablam!, Showtime's Brotherhood, etc.). Where Bucket and The Toasters truly excel, and live up to their reputation as one of the greatest bands of all time, however, is on the road. Averaging more than 200 performances a year, the band is well on its way to playing its 5,000th gig, a milestone they should achieve by the end of the decade.
Toasters fans from all over the world have known for a long time that their favourite ska band is the coolest group around, a true classic. Now, it's time for everyone else to catch up, and get hip to The Toasters!

Benefits Of Electric Toothbrush

Sunday, 20. May 2012

Benefits of Electric Toothbrush

If not looking at the eyes, people look at others’ teeth while talking. Having visibly white teeth is an indication that one highly takes care of oneself. Yellowish and cavity-loaded teeth are big no-no’s especially during an interview. Bad breath odor is also a big turn-off especially if one is talking to a cute girl or guy in a bar.

Brushing the teeth and cleaning the tongue has been a staple in almost everyone’s everyday hygiene list. Brushing removed excess food stuck between the teeth and plaque from the gums. However, with the wide variety and complexity of food everyone eats nowadays, brushing is just not enough to achieve white teeth and fresh breath. A recent study conducted by dentists compared those who are using an electric toothbrush to those using a manual toothbrush. The results showed that while the manual brush did an acceptable job, the electric toothbrush cleaned significantly better.

Regular manual brushing removes only the food and plaque from the very surface of the teeth and gums. On the other hand, an electric toothbrush penetrates more than the top teeth and gum layer, resulting to maximum plaque removal and an all over clean mouth.

One of the obvious advantages of an electric toothbrush is that it moves faster for deeper teeth cleaning. It also penetrates under the gumline which is very helpful in reducing gingivitis. People using ordinary toothbrushes tend to brush harder than those that use an electric toothbrush. Some consider this as a good thing, however if the teeth are brushed too hard, the tissue that covers the gums can be damaged. In addition, brushing too hard strips the protective layer or enamel which makes the teeth more sensitive to heat, cold, and other stimuli. An electric toothbrush requires less pressure, leaving the gum tissue with minimal damage from brushing.

Using an electric toothbrush is also ideal for those suffering from arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other motor-related or debilitating conditions. The rotating head of a rechargeable electric toothbrush does all the work and the one does not have to constantly move the hands, wrists or arms back and forth to brush.

Aside from the benefits of using an electric toothbrush, one can also choose from the different kinds of electric toothbrush. There are battery operated and rechargeable electric toothbrushes. Some battery operated brushes need AA batteries replaced every two months, while rechargeable electric brushes don’t have the need for replacement. There are also rotating and sliding brushes. A rotating oscillation brush works in a circular motion while the sliding toothbrush moves up and down. Its just a matter of preference because both are very effective in eliminating plaque and reducing gingivitis.

Another unique feature which electric toothbrushes have is the power module. The power settings can switch from low, medium, and high. The lower settings are not as effective and but is recommended for those who are just getting used to the toothbrush. One should always increase the speed as sensitivity goes down.

Research studies suggest that manual brushing for 30 to 60 seconds is not enough to clean the plaque off one’s teeth. Most electric toothbrushes have a built in two-minute timer feature that has a 30-second beep that signals time to change to another area of one’s mouth to clean.

Rush-Rush: Are We Losing the Ability to Enjoy Life?

Today we feel stressed, anxious and on edge.  Why is this?  What has happened to make so many of us so frantic and in a hurry to do everything?  With more time-saving gadgets around that ever before, why is it that many of us still complain we don’t have time to enjoy life?

We all need to slow down.  Seriously slow down. This is hard for many of us.  Even when we have a quiet moment, we are busy planning what to do the next hour, the next day and the next year.  Basically we are not living in the present moment.  And because of this, we are not able to enjoy our lives as fully as we are capable of.

Our moments of joy are few and far between. We don’t laugh as often as we should and some of us even forget to smile!  We’re simply too busy. Perhaps we had better realize the truth.  That we will never be able to finish everything.  It can never all be done.  There is always something new which will demand our attention.

Perhaps we keep ourselves busy to avoid this fact.  That we don’t want to think about what really matters in life.  Because life is so short, we make ourselves too busy to even enjoy it. It takes time to learn how to live now.  To be fully aware and present in each moment.

Start by walking slower.  This will help slow down your thoughts.  Talk slower.  Focus all your attention on doing one thing fully until that task is complete.  If you are a worrier, set aside 20 minutes a week to worry.  Then do nothing else but worry.

Then when you are done, go to your next task.  If during the week you find yourself worrying about something, set it aside for now and allocate time for it during your weekly worry time. Doing the task at hand deliberately and completely will make you feel more peaceful. When you are peaceful you will be able to enjoy each task whilst you are carrying it out.

Enjoy now.

Most people think that dental implants have been used for the last 50 years and that’s it. But this is (the root portion of the new tooth) have actually been used more than 1300 years ago. Who, you ask, was crazy enough to try implant surgery before the invention of dental anesthesia – It was the Mayans. A Mayan woman from Honduras was found to have pieces of seashells put in her mouth that looked like teeth. At first scientists thought that this was a burial tradition but a Brazilian dental professor later found out that it was placed while the woman was still alive. This is the first example of dental implants.

The implants that we know today came about as an accident. In 1952 a Swedish orthopedic surgeon, P I Branemark, was doing some medical research. He was studying bone healing and regeneration by putting titanium rods into the femurs of rabbits. After studying the healing for several months, he went to take the expensive metal rods out of the rabbits. He found that they were very difficult to remove. The titanium rods were stuck and when he finally took them out, he found bone particles still attached to the metal. The rabbit body actually accepted this metal and integrated with it!

The first dentist to experiment extensively with this kind of implants was Dr. Leonard Linkow. Over his career he placed over 19,000 teeth implants and even did impressive demonstrations at Temple University Dental School in Philadelphia. Though his implant design is different than the ones used today, he was one of the biggest advocates of dental implantology and made a difference in this area of dentistry.

Another important figure in the early days of dental implants was Stefano MelchiadeTramonte. He cleverly created a dental implant that he first used on himself. Interestingly, Stefano was not a dentist but a medical doctor. There is also a proof of some Philadelphia Cosmetic Dentist. After the implant worked successfully in his own mouth, he began placing them in the mouths of his patients (1959). After several successes, the results of his implant success were published. Branemark, the doctor who first discovered titanium’s biocompatibility with the human body was eager to study titanium in human knees and hips. Because it was difficult to find enough subjects for this type of research, he decided that it would be easiest to study titanium integration in human mouths. This is because a large percent of people had missing teeth and would willingly be subjects for implant surgery.

14 years of studies were done until1978 to prove the safety and reliability of dental implants. Then he was ready to take on a commercial project with the company now known as Nobel Biocare. Even though this was the original manufacturer, there are a variety of excellent companies that currently manufacture implants. Another outstanding company that has gained popularity is Strauman.

Teeth can never be higher than this position. Otherwise, “clicking” will occur when people talk or eat. However, teeth shouldn’t be much lower than the rest position because it makes people look old. So there is a bit of art in determining the right bite.If you are a resident of philadelphia, then you must visit some very good philadelphia dentist.

Either way, the vast majority of dental implants are now in the shape of screws and the procedure has become extremely predictable. Success rates of 95% in the top jaws and 99% in the bottom jaws have made this a popular, though expensive, treatment.
